My fiance noticed that while people play poker on TV they place a medallion or something on top of their poker chips at certain points in the game, is this just a personal preference luck charm, or something related to the game?

Actually, they place the medallion or whatever on top of their cards. It’s called “protecting” your cards.

Sometimes, the dealer will instinctively reach out and grab a player’s cards. Once the cards touch the discard pile, the hand is dead. The player cannot play that hand any more.

By putting something on top of the cards, the player lets the dealer (and everybody else at the table) know that he wishes to continue playing that hand.

You may see someone put the medallion on their chip stack, but that only happens after the hand is over.

Yup, John F has it right.

I’ve used a handful of different protectors:
    – A Hot Wheels car with the wheels hot-glued in place so it doesn’t roll away.
    – A small figurine of Kyle from South Park.
    – A fake gold dubloon that came with some pirate themed deck of cards.
    – A piece of hematite.
    – A 2 Euro piece from Austria.
    – A $1 chip from the Mystic Lake casino.
    – A bone-shaped dog tag. That turned out to be way too small and light for my taste.

See the URL below. I may have to order the one that says “Protect Your Nuts”.
